If backstabbing is a separate skill, which I myself am leaning towards at the moment, then it can be presumed to primarily be knowledge of human anatomy and one hit kill areas, weaknesses in armor, that sort of thing. A person that knows that won't necessarily know much about slash and parry.
So yes, I think we should have rogues that excel at cutting a guys throat without making a noise but get cut apart in hand to hand. As long as that's not the only type of rogue.

When you put it that way, I am suddenly completely in favor of Backstab as a separate skill. I couldn't get my head around the idea before.
